Pillars

7,000 light-years away from Earth sits M16: The Eagle Nebula. Discovered by a Swiss astronomer named Jean-Philippe Loys de Chéseaux in 1745, this nebula hosts one of the most fascinating interstellar formations my eyes have ever seen, the “Pillars of Creation”.

These pillars of cosmic dust and gas are stunningly beautiful. And what really blows my mind is that they are a factory for stars. A.FRIGGIN.FACTORY.FOR.STARS!

You can’t help but ask all those existential questions buzzing through your brain as you gaze into a photo of the pillars. Thanks to our buddies, NASA, ESA, and the Hubble Telescope program, we get to peer into otherworldly locations in space, in high resolution.

While producing this track, dubbed “Pillars”, I felt a magnetic pull towards naming the track “Spaceman”, but that idea crystallized from a memory of a picture I saw long ago of the Pillars of Creation. I remember how I felt. How I was awestruck. It was so beautiful. And sooooo far away. A single light-year is approximately 6 trillion miles. The pillars are 7,000 light-years away! Yes. I am a bonafide nerd and damn proud of it.

Continuing my commitment of one-song-a-month, “Pillars” is the fourth release from Midnight Marty. It’s been an amazing journey and it’s not over. You, reading this, are precious to me. I hope you get everything you have hoped for in life. If you ever find yourself staring into space asking the question, “Why am I here?”, I would dare say the answer is to contribute.
